Tesla is one of the most innovative and popular electric vehicle brands in the world. If you own a Tesla or are thinking of buying one, you might be wondering what kind of warranty coverage you can expect from the automaker. In this article, we will explain the different types of Tesla warranties, what they cover and exclude, and how they compare to other manufacturers.
Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty
The Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers your vehicle for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty includes the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, the Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty, and the Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty.
The Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty covers the repair or replacement of any parts manufactured or supplied by Tesla that have defects in materials or workmanship under normal use. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, damage caused by misuse, abuse, negligence, accidents, modifications, or environmental conditions.
The Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty covers the seat belts and air bags in your vehicle for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship that affect the performance of these safety features.
The Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty covers the battery pack and the electric motor in your vehicle for a period of time that varies depending on the model and trim level of your Tesla. The warranty also guarantees a minimum level of battery capacity retention over the warranty period. Here are the details for each model:
– Model S and Model X: 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period.
– Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive: 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period.
– Model 3 Long Range, Model 3 Performance, Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance: 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period.
The Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship that affect the performance or functionality of these components. It does not cover damage caused by improper use, maintenance, charging, or storage of the battery pack or the drive unit.
Tesla Used Vehicle Limited Warranty
If you buy a used Tesla directly from Tesla, you will get the remainder of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty that applies to your vehicle. In addition, you will get a Used Vehicle Limited Warranty that provides additional coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles after the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. If your vehicle does not have any remaining New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage at the time of purchase, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty will start from your delivery date.
The Used Vehicle Limited Warranty covers the same components as the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, except for the battery pack and the drive unit. These components are still covered by their original warranty terms.
Tesla Parts, Body and Paint Repair Limited Warranty
If you need to repair or replace any Tesla-branded parts on your vehicle, you can buy them directly from Tesla or have them installed by a Tesla Service Center or a Tesla Collision Center. These parts are covered by a Parts, Body and Paint Repair Limited Warranty that lasts for 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first.
This warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship that affect the performance or functionality of these parts. It does not cover normal wear and tear, damage caused by misuse, abuse, negligence, accidents, modifications, or environmental conditions.
Tesla Extended Service Agreement
Tesla does not offer an extended warranty for its vehicles. However, it does offer an Extended Service Agreement (ESA) that provides additional service and maintenance coverage for your vehicle after the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The ESA is available for purchase within 30 days before or after your New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.
The ESA covers most mechanical and electrical components of your vehicle that are not covered by other warranties. It also includes roadside assistance and access to Tesla’s network of service centers and mobile technicians. The ESA does not cover normal wear and tear items such as tires, brakes, wiper blades, fluids, filters.
